    Job description

    Reception Teaching Assistant – 1:1 SEN Support

    Location: Barnet, London, UK
    Job Type: Full Time, Temporary (Term Time Only)
    Start Date: 25 March 2026
    Salary: £95 – £100 per day
    Salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Higher rates are reserved for candidates with substantial experience and/or relevant training such a recognised Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent). Pay is determined in line with school expectations and Agency Worker Regulations (AWR), where applicable.

    The role involves providing 1:1 support for a Reception pupil who is non-verbal and has autism. The pupil follows an individualised curriculum focused on sensory-based activities and engagement, and your role will be to encourage interaction, participation, and engagement with learning in a supportive and patient way. The pupil is calm and passive, enjoys sensory activities, and may occasionally wander outside, so the role requires someone attentive and proactive.

    You will provide around 20 hours per week of 1:1 support, with the remaining time spent supporting elsewhere in the school, making this a full-time role.

    The school is a friendly one-form entry primary in Barnet with a strong community feel. It includes a pre-nursery, nursery, Additional Resource Provision (ARP), and a Children’s Centre, creating a well-supported and inclusive environment. It’s an excellent place to develop experience and grow a career in SEN and early years education.

    Requirements

    • Experience supporting children with autism, ideally within a school setting

    • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or working with children with SEN

    • A strong understanding of autism in early years

    • Patient, nurturing, and attentive approach to supporting children

    • Ability to encourage engagement through sensory and play-based activities

    • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification preferred

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide 1:1 support for a Reception pupil with autism

    • Deliver and support sensory-based activities and individual learning tasks

    • Encourage engagement and interaction through structured play and activities

    • Monitor the pupil closely to ensure safety and wellbeing, including during outdoor time

    • Work alongside the class teacher and SENCo to support the pupil’s individual learning plan

    • Assist in the classroom and wider school when not providing 1:1 support

    • Help maintain a calm, inclusive and supportive learning environment
