How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

    Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
    Location: Sheffield

    About the Company

Based in Sheffield, this established engineering business specialises in the design, manufacture, and installation of structural movement control systems and bespoke mechanical solutions for infrastructure projects.

The company delivers high-quality engineered products used in bridges, highways, rail, commercial buildings, and large-scale civil engineering projects across the UK and internationally.

With in-house design, fabrication, and project delivery capabilities, the organisation is known for producing technically robust, practical solutions that meet demanding structural and environmental performance standards. Projects range from complex steel fabrications to engineered mechanical assemblies that accommodate structural movement, load transfer, and long-term durability in challenging environments.

Due to continued growth and project demand, the company is seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join its engineering team in Sheffield.

    Role Overview

We are looking for a capable and detail-driven Mechanical Design Engineer (Senior or Lead level considered depending on experience) to support the design and development of bespoke structural and mechanical systems.

This role requires strong technical competence, particularly in manual hand calculations, structural mechanics, welding design, and fabrication processes. The successful candidate will take ownership of designs from initial concept through to manufacture, installation, and post-project review — ensuring solutions are safe, efficient, and compliant with relevant standards.

This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who enjoys practical design challenges and seeing projects through from cradle to grave.

    Key Responsibilities

    * Design and develop bespoke mechanical components and structural assemblies from concept through detailed design, manufacture, installation, and post-installation feedback

    * Perform detailed hand calculations including:

    * Stress and deflection analysis

    * Bolted and welded joint design

    * Load and fatigue assessments

    * Bearing pressures and structural capacity checks

    * Produce and review detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and manufacturing documentation using CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD)

    * Ensure designs are manufacturable by collaborating closely with in-house fabrication and welding teams

    * Apply relevant British and international design standards (BS, EN, Eurocodes, ISO)

    * Support project managers with technical input during tender, planning, and delivery stages

    * Provide technical guidance during installation and resolve on-site engineering queries where required

    * Contribute to continuous improvement by incorporating lessons learned into future design iterations

    * Ensure full compliance with quality, health & safety, and environmental standards

For Senior / Lead level candidates:

Review and approve designs from junior engineers
    Provide technical mentorship and leadership
Lead complex or high-value engineering projects
Represent the engineering function in client and project meetings

    Requirements

    * Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

    * Demonstrable experience in mechanical or structural design engineering

    * Strong capability in manual engineering calculations (essential)

    * Sound understanding of welding design, weld symbols, and fabrication processes (cutting, machining, assembly)

    * Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)

    * Good understanding of materials selection, tolerancing, and manufacturing techniques

    * Familiarity with BS, EN, Eurocode, and ISO standards

    * Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

    * Strong communication and collaboration abilities

    Desirable

Experience working on infrastructure, civil engineering, or construction projects
Familiarity with FEA tools (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation)
Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
5+ years of industry experience (more for Senior/Lead level)

    What’s on Offer

    * Opportunity to work on technically challenging, bespoke engineering projects with visible real-world impact

    * A collaborative and experienced engineering team environment

    * Exposure to full lifecycle engineering, from concept through to site installation

    * Competitive salary and benefits package

    * Clear progression opportunities into Senior or Lead roles

    * Professional development support

If you are a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer looking to work on challenging, real-world infrastructure projects and take ownership of designs from concept through to installation, we would love to hear from you
