Purpose of the Role
To ensure the college buildings are opened, secured, safe, clean, and fully operational each day. The Premises Officer plays a key role in the smooth running of the campus by providing reliable caretaking support, managing access, supporting events and room setups, and maintaining a welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
1. Key Holding, Security & Access Control
Open and close buildings daily, ensuring all areas are secure.
Act as a key holder and respond to alarm activations or out‑of‑hours call‑outs.
Monitor access control systems, ensuring only authorised individuals enter restricted areas.
Conduct regular security checks across the site, reporting concerns promptly.
Liaise with security staff and external contractors when required.
2. Caretaking & Daily Operations
Ensure classrooms, corridors, communal areas and facilities are clean, tidy and ready for use.
Move furniture, set up rooms for classes, exams, meetings and events.
Manage deliveries, post, and movement of goods around the campus.
Support waste management, recycling and general housekeeping duties.
Maintain stock levels of cleaning, caretaking and consumable supplies.
3. Basic Maintenance & Site Support
(Light-touch, non‑technical tasks)
Carry out simple repairs such as replacing bulbs, tightening fixtures, minor painting, and basic DIY tasks.
Report defects promptly and support contractors working on site.
Assist with routine checks such as fire alarm tests, emergency lighting, water flushing and H&S inspections (training provided).
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
Follow all college H&S procedures, including safe working practices and safeguarding responsibilities.
Keep accurate records of daily checks, room setups, incidents and site issues.
Ensure safe access during adverse weather (e.g., gritting, clearing pathways).
Support evacuation procedures and act as a fire marshal when required.
5. Customer Service & College Support
Provide friendly, helpful support to staff, students and visitors.
Respond to facilities requests in a timely and professional manner.
Assist with college events, open days and community activities.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
Experience in a caretaking, facilities, premises or building support role.
Confident with key holding, building opening/locking and basic security procedures.
Practical, hands‑on approach with basic DIY skills.
Good communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings or occasional weekends.
Desirable
Experience in an education, public sector or multi‑site environment.
Awareness of Health & Safety, safeguarding and compliance routines.
Fire marshal or first aid training (or willingness to undertake).
Experience with basic compliance checks (training provided).
