How our sorting works

The order in which job vacancies are displayed is determined by a composite score based on the following factors:

  • Keyword Relevance: How well your search terms match the vacancy details. We prioritize matches found in the job title, followed by job requirements, location names, and educational levels. Matches within general employer information or the organization's name carry a lower weight.
  • Commercial Prioritization (Premium Jobs): Vacancies paid for by employers ('Premium' or 'Sponsored') receive a ranking boost and will appear higher in the search results.
  • Recency (Date Relevance): Newer vacancies are prioritized. The relevance score of a vacancy is reduced by half once the posting is older than 30 days.
  • Proximity (Distance Relevance): Vacancies located closer to your search location are ranked higher. For vacancies located more than 30 km from the search center, the relevance score is halved.
The final ranking is established by multiplying all these individual factors to calculate the total relevance score.

    Job description

Building Surveyor – Estates & Facilities

    Competitive salary plus excellent benefits

The University of Hull is continuing its ambitious programme to modernise and enhance the campus environment while delivering an exceptional experience for students, colleagues, and visitors. As part of this transformation, our Estates & Facilities Directorate is investing in the quality, safety, and sustainability of our built environment. We are now seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Building Surveyor to play a key role in maintaining and improving our diverse estate.

As a Building Surveyor within the Estates Operations team, you will take responsibility for the maintenance, repair, compliance, and refurbishment of buildings across the University’s estate. Your work will directly support a safe, attractive, and sustainable campus environment.

    You will:

    • Conduct detailed building condition assessments and produce recommendations, specifications, and technical documentation to support maintenance and refurbishment strategies.
    • Maintain and update buildings drawings, technical standards, statutory records, and asset management information across plant and equipment.
    • Lead and optimise building systems performance, identifying efficiency improvements and supporting the University’s sustainability objectives.
    • Manage asbestos registers and ensure compliance with legislation, safe working practices, and asbestos management plans.
    • Ensure all work complies with relevant health and safety legislation, standards, and University policies, including risk assessments, permits to work, and best practice procedures.
    • Work collaboratively with Mechanical & Electrical colleagues, Estates Projects teams, contractors, and consultants to support both day‑to‑day operations and planned projects.
    • Oversee contractor management, budget monitoring, troubleshooting, emergency response, and continual improvement of maintenance services.

This role offers a varied workload across a broad estate, providing opportunities to contribute to both operational delivery and strategic planning.

We are looking for a professional, motivated Building Surveyor with strong technical knowledge and a commitment to maintaining high-quality, safe, and fit for purpose facilities.

    You will ideally have:

    • A relevant degree or equivalent professional experience in building surveying or a related discipline.
    • Professional qualifications or progress toward them (e.g., RICS, MRICS, P405).
    • Strong knowledge of building regulations, health & safety legislation, building pathology, and best practice in maintenance and asset management.
    • Experience managing teams, contractors, or maintenance operations in a complex environment.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to summarise technical information for diverse stakeholders.
    • Strong organisational, problem solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high quality outcomes.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward‑thinking Estates & Facilities Directorate that is evolving to meet the demands of a dynamic higher education sector. You will contribute directly to the University’s strategic vision by ensuring our facilities are sustainable, fit for purpose, and aligned to long‑term organisational priorities. This is an opportunity to shape a significant portfolio, drive meaningful change and make a lasting impact.
