    Job description

Are you a Control Systems Engineer with Siemens PLC experience looking for a role focused on developing and improving industrial control systems? Would you enjoy a position that is primarily computer-based, with only occasional site visits each year?

We are recruiting for an Electrical Control Systems Engineer to join a well-established engineering business working on specialist machinery and test systems. This is a varied role focused on PLC programming, software development and system integration, with the opportunity to work on both new equipment and upgrades to existing machinery.

The business is open to experienced engineers or junior candidates (such as an electrical graduate with a couple of years of industrial experience), as long as you already have hands-on Siemens PLC experience using TIA Portal and WinCC.

    The Role

This role focuses heavily on the development and modification of control software, typically using Siemens PLC and HMI systems alongside a LabVIEW front end. You’ll work closely with the wider engineering team to develop new machine control systems, diagnose faults in existing equipment, and support commissioning of new installations.

The position is mainly office and computer-based, with travel to customer sites typically around four times per year for installation or commissioning activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Development and improvement of control software using Siemens PLC and HMI systems
    • Programming using TIA Portal, WinCC and Ladder logic
    • Development of systems using Siemens PLC with LabVIEW front end
    • Diagnosing faults on existing electro-mechanical and control systems
    • Supporting upgrades and improvements to existing machinery
    • Commissioning and testing of new machines
    • Contributing technical input to sales proposals
    • Occasional travel to UK customer sites for installation and commissioning work

Depending on experience, the role may also include:

    • Creating electrical drawings and panel layouts using EPLAN
    • Preparing designs for manufacture and working with external suppliers
    • Supporting electrical build projects and supervising technicians or subcontractors

    What We’re Looking For

    • Siemens PLC programming experience (TIA Portal, WinCC) – essential
    • Experience with S7-1500 / S7-1200 controllers and ladder programming
    • Strong troubleshooting and fault-finding skills on electro-mechanical systems
    • Methodical approach with good communication skills
    • Full UK driving licence

    Desirable experience includes:

    • Siemens Safety PLC programming
    • Siemens drives (G120 / S120) or Control Techniques drives (M700)
    • Electrical design using EPLAN
    • Experience with LabVIEW
    • Knowledge of Machinery Directive / Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations

    Salary & Benefits

    • £45,000 – £60,000 depending on experience
    • Discretionary annual company performance bonus (up to £3,000 – awarded every year since 2020)
    • 40-hour working week with flexible start/finish times and early finish on Fridays
    • 24 days holiday + bank holidays
    • Company pension with matched contributions up to 5%
    • Life assurance (£30,000)

This is a primarily office-based engineering role, ideal for someone who enjoys programming and systems development while still having occasional involvement in real-world machine commissioning.

Due to the volume of applications we receive, we will only be able to respond to successful applicants
