Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Fortress Recruit is working with a Defence Manufacturer who are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead and deliver complex electrical projects across full platform lifecycles.
This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer who can take ownership of electrical architecture and detailed design, mentor junior engineers, and drive high standards across regulated engineering programmes. You’ll work from requirements capture and system architecture through to detailed design, qualification testing, and production support, ensuring compliant, robust, and cost-effective solutions are delivered to specification.
Key responsibilities:

Lead electrical design across complete platforms, including cabinets, cable assemblies, power and data integration, and system-level routing.

Produce and oversee detailed schematics, cable drawings, and supporting documentation in line with internal, customer, and legislative standards.

Support and oversee verification and qualification testing (EMC, vibration, shock, environmental), including attendance at key test activities.
*
Ensure designs are compliant, manufacturable, and fit for purpose through structured design reviews and strong design assurance.

Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.
*
Contribute to new business input, cost estimates, and continuous improvement initiatives.
*
Report on technical progress, resource utilisation, and programme performance.
To be considered, you’ll have:

An Engineering degree, or HNC/HND with significant experience.
*
9+ years’ electrical/electronic design experience within a regulated environment (defence, aerospace, rail or similar).
*
Strong background in schematics, cable design, system routing, and full lifecycle delivery.
*
Good understanding of power/data integration and EMC compliance.
*
Experience supporting qualification testing (hands-on EMC experience desirable).
*
Strong CAD knowledge and confidence working in documentation-heavy environments.
*
Proven ability to lead, mentor, and influence teams.
*
Eligibility for SC Clearance (5 years' UK residency with no visa or sponsorship requirement).
This is a full-time, permanent role based on-site in Poole, with flexible working and occasional travel as required.
