    About the role

    Our Portfolio Underwriter will be responsible for managing a portfolio of commercial package policies, primarily across UK Property & Casualty classes, while supporting selective underwriting of Professional Indemnity risks.


    The role focuses on delivering profitable growth, maintaining underwriting discipline, and building strong broker relationships.


    What you'll get up to:

    • Underwrite new business, renewals, and mid-term adjustments within delegated authority.
    • Evaluate risk across core P&C lines including:
    • Property (material damage, business interruption)
    • Liability (employers, public, and products liability)
    • Support underwriting of Professional Indemnity risks with guidance where required.
    • Apply technical underwriting judgement to assess exposure, coverage, and pricing adequacy.
    • Manage a defined book of package business to achieve profitability and growth targets.
    • Monitor portfolio performance (loss ratios, retention, rate adequacy).
    • Identify trends and take corrective underwriting actions.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with UK regional brokers.
    • Support new business development through broker visits and presentations.
    • Apply rating tools, underwriting guidelines, and market insight to price risks appropriately.
    • Ensure policy wordings, endorsements, and coverage align with risk appetite.
    • Contribute to wording enhancements, especially in P&C package products.
    • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal authority levels and regulatory requirements (Financial Conduct Authority standards).
    • Maintain accurate documentation and audit trails.
    • Strong grounding in UK commercial P&C underwriting.
    • Working knowledge of Professional Indemnity underwriting principles.
    • Ability to interpret underwriting data, claims trends, and financial metrics.
    • Sound judgement in balancing risk vs reward.
    • Confident communicator with brokers and internal stakeholders.
    • High level of accuracy in policy construction and documentation.


    About you:

    • Experience in UK commercial underwriting.
    • Exposure to package policies or SME/mid-market business preferred.
    • Experience in Professional Indemnity is desirable.
    • Progress towards or completion of a professional insurance qualification (e.g. CII).
    • Experience contributing to portfolio analysis, pricing reviews, or underwriting strategy.
    • Demonstrable underwriting judgement with the ability to balance risk, pricing, and commercial considerations.
    • Experience working with brokers and managing broker relationships.
    • Good understanding of FCA regulation and the UK insurance market.
    • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
