A leading UK law firm is seeking a Newly Qualified or Nearly Qualified Patent Attorney to join its expanding Intellectual Property team based in London. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an engineering or physics background to grow within a collaborative, highly experienced practice.
About the Role
The successful candidate will support clients across a wide range of engineering and technology-driven sectors, advising on patent drafting, prosecution, IP strategy and portfolio development. You will work closely with technical specialists, commercial teams and a diverse client base — from innovative start-ups to established businesses with significant IP assets.
Key Responsibilities
Drafting & Prosecution
- Draft patent specifications and design applications
- Prepare responses to official actions
- Manage UK, European and international prosecution, coordinating with foreign associates
Client Advisory & Strategy
- Provide clear, commercially focused advice on patentability, infringement and freedom to operate
- Review and assess prior art
- Advise on confidentiality considerations, filing strategies and the enforceability of third‑party rights
- Support contentious matters where appropriate
Portfolio & Commercial Support
- Assist clients in developing strategic and commercially relevant patent portfolios
- Monitor competitor activity and relevant technology developments
- Support IP aspects of commercial transactions
- Create budgets and contribute to business development content
Collaboration
- Work closely with colleagues across technical and legal disciplines
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, insights and best practice discussions
What We’re Looking For
- Newly qualified or nearly qualified UK/EU Patent Attorney
- Degree in engineering (strongly preferred) or physics
- Strong analytical ability and comfort with complex technical subject matter
- Clear and concise communication skills
- Organised, proactive and confident managing deadlines
- Collaborative team player with a client‑focused approach
