Commercial Lawyer – Investment Banking
Office Location: Canary Wharf (4 days per week onsite 1 remote)
Main purpose of the role:
Member of collegiate Legal team working primarily with Cantor Fitzgerald’s equity and investment banking teams in London and the EMEA region, although the role will also cover other offices and other workstreams, depending upon the Group’s requirements at any particular time.
This is a visible role with regular interaction with the business and management. There is a genuine global dimension to the remit as well as substantial autonomy and responsibility. The environment is fast paced, and the customer base is very demanding therefore the role requires a person who is able to deal with pressure, can commit to deadlines and work at a good pace. Role reporting to the Head of Cantor Corporate and Commercial Legal, Europe and Asia.
The position is suited to a lawyer with solid exposure to ECM and/or other investment banking transactions, but whose core strength lies in corporate, commercial and financial services legal work. The successful candidate will operate as a trusted adviser to bankers and senior stakeholders, balancing execution support with risk management and commercial judgement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements and providing legal advice on business issues. Agreements include terms of business, confidentiality agreements, engagement letters, placing and underwriting agreements, intra-group agreements, supplier/vendor contracts as well as transaction-specific ancillary documentation.
- Liaising with internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure all legal queries and documentation are reflective of the business objectives and in line with regulatory requirements.
- Advise on applicable UK/EU financial services and capital markets regulations.
- Manage relationships with external counsel across transactions and commercial matters.
- Coordinate cross-border matters with regional legal teams where required.
- Periodically advising on corporate projects, which may include new offices, reorganisations and joint ventures.
Skills / experience required:
- English qualified lawyer with a minimum of 4 year post qualification experience in commercial law. Would also suit a foreign commonwealth or European lawyer of equivalent qualification.
- Experience gained at a reputable law firm and/or within an investment bank or financial institution.
- While ECM experience is valuable, the role is not limited to ECM execution and includes broader advisory and commercial responsibilities.
- Robust but engaging personality essential. This will be a visible role with very close interaction with other departments both in the front and back office.
- Good academics required.
- Shares knowledge/experience with the team.
- Good reporting skills / confidence to clarify instructions.
