    Job description

Graduate Teaching Assistant – SEMH School (Newark)

    Location: Newark

    Hours: 8:30am – 4:00pm

    Start Date: Immediate

Milk Education is seeking dedicated, motivated Graduate Teaching Assistants to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional & Mental Health) school in Newark. This role is ideal for graduates with a passion for education, psychology, youth work, criminology, or mental health who are looking to gain hands-on experience supporting vulnerable young people.

Working within a specialist SEMH setting, you will play a key role in supporting pupils who require additional emotional, behavioural, and academic support. You will help students engage positively with learning, develop essential life skills, and work towards their individual goals.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide targeted 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
    • Support students in accessing learning activities and meeting individual learning targets.
    • Build trusting and supportive relationships to promote emotional regulation and social development.
    • Assist pupils with communication skills, confidence-building, and resilience.
    • Promote positive behaviour and apply behaviour-management strategies, responding calmly to challenging situations.
    • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to ensure consistent and effective support.

    Essential Requirements:

    • An undergraduate degree (e.g. Psychology, Education, Youth Work, Criminology, Sociology, or a related field).
    • Relevant experience working with children or young people with SEN, SEMH, or challenging behaviour (desirable).
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships quickly.
    • A patient, caring, and proactive approach to supporting young people.
    • Ability to follow guidance while using initiative when appropriate.
