    Job description

MacConvilles is a long‑established, multidisciplinary construction consultancy based in the South East. With a proud reputation for delivering outstanding results across sectors including residential, education, healthcare, commercial, leisure, ecclesiastical and industrial projects, we combine technical expertise with a genuinely personal approach.

We’re growing — and now have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Designer (Building Safety Act) to join our close‑knit, talented team. This is a pivotal and influential role, supporting clients and project teams in achieving full compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022 across a diverse range of projects.

    The Opportunity

Working at the forefront of evolving building safety legislation, you will lead and manage compliance with the Building Safety Act and associated regulations. Acting on behalf of our clients, you’ll play a central role in ensuring that building safety risks are identified, eliminated, reduced, and effectively managed throughout the design and pre‑construction phases.

You’ll plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate design work; prepare, review, and assure Gateway submissions; maintain the Golden Thread of Information; and liaise with duty holders, regulators and wider stakeholders. This is a client‑facing, advisory role where your technical expertise and leadership will directly support accountable persons, asset managers and project teams in meeting new and complex regulatory duties.

This is a hybrid role, blending office collaboration, site engagement and remote working — offering the professional challenge of high‑profile projects with the flexibility to support your work–life balance.

    What We’re Looking For

You’ll bring a design‑related background, along with strong organisational, communication and stakeholder‑management skills. You should have a proactive, collaborative, and adaptable approach, with the confidence to challenge, support and coordinate others to drive building safety excellence.

We’re looking for someone educated to degree level (or equivalent) in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related discipline, ideally supported by chartered membership of a relevant professional body (such as CIAT, RIBA, ICE, IStructE, CIOB, RICS or IFE). Demonstrable CPD in building safety and regulatory compliance is essential, together with the ability to interpret and apply the Building Safety Act, Approved Documents, British Standards and associated guidance.

You’ll have the ability to lead design risk reviews, interpret fire and structural safety information, manage competing priorities, and build effective relationships with clients, designers, contractors and regulatory bodies. Strong IT and communication skills (written and verbal) are also required.

Desirable attributes include a recognised fire engineering qualification, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, and/or accreditation aligned with PAS 8671, but we welcome candidates with the drive and capability to continue developing in these areas.

Above all, you’ll share our values: bold in your approach, curious in your thinking, adaptable in your delivery, loyal to your team and clients, and committed to building on our proud legacy.

    Why Join MacConvilles?

We offer the best of both worlds: a close‑knit, friendly team that supports one another, and the scale and diversity of projects that keep things ambitious and rewarding. You’ll be given autonomy to lead your work, the trust to influence project outcomes, and the encouragement to shape and develop your own areas of specialism.

In return, we offer a competitive salary of around £55,000+ (dependent on experience), 22 days’ holiday plus bank holidays and a Christmas break, a discretionary bonus scheme, pension, healthcare, life insurance, flexible working options, EV salary‑sacrifice scheme, cycle‑to‑work scheme, on‑site parking, and payment of professional fees.

We’re proud to offer hybrid working and a culture built on transparency, collaboration and long‑term thinking. MacConvilles is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all.

    APPLY TODAY

If you’re looking for a role where your expertise will genuinely influence building safety and help shape safer projects across the South, we’d love to hear from you.
