Job Title: IP Counsel
By joining Philips IP&S as an IP Counsel, you join an international community of experienced and highly trained IP professionals with a wide range of technical expertise. As a strategic advisor in IP matters, you will support Philips’ businesses and research organization.
You will provide strategic IP counseling to the Philips Hospital Patient Monitoring (HPM) business unit and its research team operating in Europe, help Philips businesses secure a competitive advantage by protecting new technical developments and innovations, enforce Philips IP rights against third‑party infringers, assess infringement risks, and secure value for IP in transactions. This role is within the Philips HPM IP team.
Your roleEvaluate invention disclosures with the goal of providing optimal protection and generating maximum long‑term value to Philips. Prepare, file, and prosecute high‑quality patent applications meeting international standards. Maintain a substantial and active prosecution docket of European and foreign patent applications. Serve as an IP contact person for a selected product category and develop independence in providing strategic guidance and support to internal stakeholders. Provide strategic IP counseling to internal clients, including negotiating and drafting agreements with IP provisions such as strategic collaboration, joint development, licensing, and mergers and acquisitions. Work in collaboration with senior IP&S colleagues to enforce Philips IP rights against infringers, assess and manage third‑party IP risks, and, when necessary, seek to obtain access to third‑party IP rights at the lowest cost possible for Philips’ products and services.
You're the right fit if- At least a bachelor level degree in science (preferably computer science) or engineering.
- At least partial qualification for the European qualifying examination (EQE) or admission to practice before the China National Intellectual Property Administration and/or the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English is a must and preferably German.
- 5 to 10 years of experience in handling IP matters.
- Drafting and prosecuting internationally filed patent applications.
- IP risk product assessments.
- Contract drafting and negotiation.
- IP litigation and administrative enforcement.
- IP licensing.
- IP valuation.
- A proactive, entrepreneurial, business‑oriented working attitude and a proven understanding of the commercial value of IP.
- Strong analytical and organization skills.
- Excellent relationship building, influencing, and negotiation skills.
- The confidence and communication skills to operate at all levels both internally and externally.
