Vacaturebeschrijving

Cryogenic Low-Noise, Low-Power Sub-10 GHz CMOS Receivers. Job Description

Are you passionate about analog and RF circuit design? Do you have a strong background in microelectronics and want to apply your expertise to cutting‑edge quantum technology? Join our interdisciplinary research team to help shape the future of quantum computing!

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to develop cryogenic CMOS receiver circuits for scalable quantum bit (qubit) readout. This project lies at the intersection of quantum technology and integrated circuit (IC) design, offering a unique opportunity to work on advanced cryogenic electronics within a multidisciplinary environment.

Your Mission

You will contribute to the design and implementation of scalable cryogenic CMOS receivers optimized for sub‑10 GHz operation. These receivers are essential components for reading out the state of multiple qubits in next‑generation quantum systems. The project will include:

  • Architecture Exploration: Investigate and evaluate various receiver topologies and readout architectures based on scalability, signal‑to‑noise ratio, readout speed, and tolerance to circuit non‑idealities such as noise and distortion.
  • Circuit Design: Design key receiver blocks, including low‑noise amplifiers, mixers, and baseband amplifiers, optimized for operation at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Receiver Characterization: Evaluate receiver performance at both room and cryogenic temperatures.
  • System Integration: Co‑integrate your receiver circuits with quantum bits (qubits) in a dilution refrigerator and demonstrate real‑time qubit readout.
What We Offer
  • A challenging and exciting research project at the forefront of quantum and microelectronics integration.
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratory infrastructure and cleanroom facilities.
  • Close collaboration with leading experts in quantum technologies, IC design, and cryogenic electronics.
  • A dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary research environment.
Requirements
  • M.Sc. In Microelectronics or a closely related field.
  • Solid background in analog, mixed‑signal, and RF circuit design.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international research setting.
  • Demonstrated creativity, originality, and a drive for high‑quality research.
Conditions of Employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5‑year contract with an official go/no‑go progress assessment within 15 months, followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 3059 per month in the first year to € 3881 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, providing an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline‑related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

Application Procedure

Have you become enthusiastic about this vacancy? Please apply no later than 22 March 2026 via the application button and upload the following documents:

  • A cover letter in which you describe your personal motivation and specific qualifications for this position (max 1 page).
  • Your curriculum vitae, including a list of your publications (if applicable).
  • An academic transcript, including grades for your qualifying degrees (BSc, MSc).

You can address your application to Masoud Babaie.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English‑taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements.

Please Note
  • You can apply online. We will not process applications sent by email and/or post.
  • As part of knowledge security, TU Delft conducts a risk assessment during the recruitment of personnel. We do this, among other things, to prevent the unwanted transfer of sensitive knowledge and technology. The assessment is based on information provided by the candidates themselves, such as their motivation letter and CV, and takes place at the final stages of the selection process. When the outcome of the assessment is negative, the candidate will be informed.
