Your challenge as a System Signalling Engineer
A System Designer needs to have a clear view on what the system boundaries are and be able to embed the customer’s signaling rules. To achieve this, he/she needs to be able to interpret customer requirements using operational scenarios or use cases and convert them into system requirements. Furthermore, he/she needs to develop the architecture and identify/evaluate the internal and external interfaces.
The design decisions you have made need to be traceable and supported by models, calculations, or simulations. The next step is to convert the system design into a hardware design and a software design. Depending on the project, this is done by the engineering team itself or outsourced. Therefore, at least you need to be able to:
- Understand electrical drawings and make changes using Autocad or Microstation.
- Configure and understand application data (software configuration) for subsystems like interlocking and radio block centre.
After the technical solution is released and transferred to the Verification and Validation team for testing purposes, the system designer needs to be available to support root cause analysis in case the V&V team finds non-conformities.
Of course, it is not expected that you have this complete skillset already when you start in this position. We have a strong experienced team who can mentor you, and the Alstom University offers a variety of training programs.
Key accountabilities
- Design system and provide related documents (specification, architecture, interface, etc.).
- Ensure application data or coding is performed regarding the process and ready for testing.
- Investigate the Verification and Validation (V&V) test failures for corrective actions.
Performance measurements
- Project quality, cost, and delivery commitment.
- On-time delivery for deliverables.
- Cooperation and reactivity to support Root Cause Analysis Identification of contract variations (through traceability & coverage of requirements).
Your colleagues
You will mainly work within small project teams. Each long-term project will have a core team with a Project Architect, Project Manager, Safety Manager, and System Designers including you. You will report to Neill Sweet (Engineering Team Leader).
Career opportunities
Since you are part of a large, international company within a growing industry, you have more than sufficient career and development opportunities. Some options are: System Designer (of larger or more complex projects) or Project Architect (Lead System Designer). Because of the international character of the company, there are possibilities to work in international projects or work for projects in other countries.
Offered
You will work within multidisciplinary teams and together you will achieve a concrete end-result. The Alstom University offers many possibilities to develop yourself with your job, career, and as a person. An example is learning a foreign language with help of native speakers. And because we are a large company, there are sufficient career opportunities including abroad.
The ideal System Designer
Our ideal System Designer speaks English (Dutch or French are desirable) and is graduated in Engineering (e.g., Physics, Aviation, Electronics, or Computer Science). He/she is pro-active and not afraid to take responsibility.
