Vacaturebeschrijving

Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to join our team at Amsterdam UMC to map the future of kidney care in Europe. You will lead epidemiological research that directly impacts clinical decisions for patients with chronic kidney disease across Europe.

We are offering an exciting opportunity for a PhD candidate to join our research team at Amsterdam UMC, where you will focus on epidemiological research into chronic kidney disease (CKD) across Europe. Your research will explore the occurrence, progression, and clinical outcomes of CKD patients, comparing data from various European countries. Key areas of your research will include understanding why certain patients transition to dialysis or transplantation, while others opt for conservative care, as well as identifying individuals at risk of developing kidney disease at an early stage. Your findings will directly contribute to improving patient care and clinical decision-making across Europe.

As a PhD student, you will be responsible for conducting research on CKD patients using data from the forthcoming European Chronic Kidney Disease Registry, as well as other large European population databases. A key part of your role will be supporting the development of this registry and collaborating with national and regional kidney disease registries to collect valuable data for analysis.

In addition to your primary research, you will also contribute to the ERA Registry, which collects data on patients with kidney failure undergoing dialysis or kidney transplantation across Europe. You will assist in the publication of the ERA Registry’s annual report and related scientific articles.

Team and development

Our team is composed of senior and postdoctoral researchers, two PhD students, a data manager, and a management assistant. You will work closely with nephrologists from different European countries, gaining valuable experience in international research collaboration. Throughout your PhD journey, you will have the chance to attend various courses, including those in epidemiology and scientific writing, to support your professional development.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic candidate who brings the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in epidemiology, medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, medical informatics, biomedical health science, or a related field.
  • Strong motivation to pursue a PhD in epidemiology and public health research.
  • Enthusiasm to engage in data collection processes and collaborative research.
  • Service-oriented communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with international partners.
  • Proficiency in English, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A detail-oriented approach to data analysis, ensuring high-quality and scientifically accurate results.
  • A flying start to your career in scientific research.
  • Plenty of room for your drive to shape tomorrow's healthcare.
  • Working on large-scale and in-house research, with motivated colleagues from all over the world.
  • You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV.
  • A contract for 12 months, with the intention to extend for a total of 4 years. The Guideline PhD contract applies to this vacancy.
  • Salary scale for PhD students salary scale OIO: €3,108 to €3,939 gross, or if holding a Master’s degree in Medicine, salary scale 10: €3,598 to €5,669 gross for a full-time position (depending on experience), with an additional year-end bonus of 8.3%
  • Holiday hours: 190.4 per year for fulltime and a possibility to save additional hours.
  • Pension accrual with BeFrank, a modern, comprehensible and fairly priced pension.
  • For >7 km each way, 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs and, for private transport, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km each way.
