Tax Accounting Controller

We are looking for an enthusiastic Direct Tax Accounting Controller to join our dynamic Global Accounting team in Amsterdam. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative environment and drive impactful change in tax accounting and compliance projects.

We are looking for a highly skilled professional with solid experience in tax accounting (current and deferred taxes, effective tax rate calculations), income tax compliance and a comprehensive understanding of various functional areas within Finance such as Accounting, Statutory reporting, Financial Systems, Compliance and Risk & Controls.

As part of the Global Accounting team, you will play a pivotal role in leading the current and deferred income tax calculations, effective tax rate calculations for the group reporting, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and driving process improvements. Strong communication skills and a proactive attitude are essential as you collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders and take on additional responsibilities to support the team's objectives.

Tasks & Responsibilities

1. Prepare and/or review effective tax rate (ETR) computations, income tax calculations for Booking entities, including current and deferred tax provision, return to provision (RTP) adjustments, and uncertain tax positions (UTPs)
2. Analyze ETR and tax provision calculations, including current tax payable and receivable, deferred tax assets and liabilities, valuation allowances, UTPs, to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
3. Manage CIT compliance activities such as conducting reviews of CIT returns, addressing regulatory requirements, arranging income tax payments, etc.
4. Prepare and/or review tax-related balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial information and supporting documentation.
5. Develop and maintain documentation of tax-related internal controls, ensuring effectiveness and adequacy of controls related to tax processes and financial reporting.
6. Develop and maintain tax accounting policies and procedures in accordance with applicable accounting standards (e.g. ASC 740), ensuring alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.
7. Establish and standardize tax accounting processes across all regions to ensure income tax compliance and accurate tax reporting.
8. Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors regarding tax accounting matters.
9. Coordinate with external advisors on CIT filings and compliance for regional entities.
10. Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements and drive change, focusing on automation and simplification of tasks related to tax accounting and compliance.
11. Identify, initiate, and prioritize process improvements that directly impact daily activities within the accounting and finance department.
12. Partner closely with Financial Controllers, Tax Managers, and other key Finance stakeholders to align on priorities and support cross-functional projects.
13. Support tax audits, including responding to inquiries and preparing documentation.
14. Act as backup for Senior controller as required on other tax related areas.

Required Education, Qualifications & Experience

1. University degree in Accounting, Business, or Economics and/or postgraduate education (RA/CPA)
2. Minimum 5-8 years’ experience in finance and/or accounting, preferably within tax accounting and multinational corporate environment.
3. Sound knowledge of US GAAP and tax principles, with the ability to interpret tax legislation/ accounting standards and translate it into practice.
4. Strong technical skills, including proficiency in SAP S4 HANA, OneStream, OneSource Tax Provision, and advanced MS Excel.
5. Experience working in a team in an international company and matrix organization.
6. Track record in successfully representing finance in cross-functional projects.
7. Adaptability and capability to lead and drive change, with analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
8. Hands-on approach with the ability to see the bigger picture while preparing detailed calculations.
9. Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills.
10. Fluent in spoken and written English, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic and high-change environment.
