Vacaturebeschrijving

Assistant Professor in Information and Coding Theory

We are an internationally top-ranking university in the Netherlands that combines scientific curiosity with a hands‑on attitude.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Information and Coding Theory. We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to advance research in modern coding and/or information theory, with emphasis on applications in reliable data storage, networks, communication systems, or other emerging technologies. Candidates whose expertise bridges classical coding theory with novel paradigms, such as quantum information theory, are especially encouraged to apply.

Job Description

The position is embedded in the Mathematical Communication Theory (MCT) group at TU/e. TU/e has a long‑standing tradition of excellence in coding and information theory, providing a strong foundation for research in these fields. Coding theory, the science of transmitting and storing data reliably, plays a crucial role in all modern communication systems and is fundamentally rooted in information theory.

The MCT group advances research on communication theory at the intersection of mathematics and electrical engineering, with a particular emphasis on the mathematical foundations of the discipline. Positioned at this interface, the group combines rigorous theoretical approaches with practical perspectives and actively builds bridges between communities, fostering synergies across mathematics, electrical engineering, and applied sciences more broadly.

The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in information theory or coding theory, with a research profile that aligns with one or more of the group’s core areas: network communications, DNA data storage, distributed data storage, and quantum error correction. Candidates whose work expands one or more of these directions through new methodologies and mathematical frameworks are especially encouraged to apply. This role supports the development of an independent research agenda and academic growth while actively collaborating with the MCT group through research collaborations and joint funding applications.

Job Requirements
  • Motivated researcher, with a PhD in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable domain.
  • Strong mathematical background, enabling integration into a mathematics research group, collaboration across disciplines, and designing/teaching courses in mathematics.
  • Extensive expertise in communication and information theory, with a solid understanding of their practical applications and relevance to industry and technology.
  • Interest in bridging fundamental research with practical applications and industrial partners.
  • Ability to conduct high‑quality academic research, reflected in demonstrable outputs.
  • Motivated to teach, contribute to teaching processes, and develop excellent teaching skills.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring of students and staff, leading a project or chairing a group.
  • Excellent written and verbal proficiency in English.
Conditions of Employment
  • An 18‑month contract as Assistant Professor, which can become permanent after 12 months at the same employment level upon successful evaluation. Experienced candidates may be offered a permanent contract from the start.
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 11 (min. €4,728 max. €6,433).
  • A year‑end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • A dedicated mentoring program to help you get to know the university and the Dutch research environment.
  • A development track with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. If you have a more senior profile, a tailor‑made career proposal will be considered.
  • High‑quality training programmes for academic leadership and teaching.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on‑campus children’s day care and sports facilities.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) and partner career support.
Application

We invite you to submit a complete application. The application should include a:

  • Cover letter describing your motivation and qualifications for the position.
  • Curriculum vitae, including a list of your publications and the contact information of three references. Kindly note that we may reach out to references at any stage of the recruitment process. We recommend notifying your references upon submitting your application.
  • Description of your scientific interests and plans (1–2 pages).
  • Statement of your teaching goals and experience (1–2 pages).

We look forward to receiving your application and will screen it as soon as possible.

Please note
  • You can apply online. We will not process applications sent by email and/or post.
  • A pre‑employment screening (e.g. Knowledge security check) can be part of the selection procedure. For more information on the knowledge security check, please consult the National Knowledge Security Guidelines.
  • Please do not contact us for unsolicited services.
