Join our team at TU Delft to develop a novel electromagnetic flow meter for turbulent pipe flow
Job descriptionElectromagnetic (EM) flow meters are widely used in industry for accurate measurements of turbulent pipe flows. In this project you explore novel fundamental approaches of an EM flow meter with a non-insulating pipe wall. The research will use existing MHD direct numerical simulations to investigate the flow physics. You will also construct a prototype to test the performance using an in-house 3T magnet. The turbulent pipe flow will be characterized using modern optical methods, over a large range of Reynolds numbers from 1E4 up to 1E6. The research co-funded by an industrial partner, who is the intended user of the research.
Job requirementsWe are looking for a motivated and curious candidate with:
- A Master's degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or related discipline;
- A relevant background in fluid mechanics and experimental methods;
- Hands-on experience with modern experimental methods for flow measurement is preferable;
- Affinity for working with complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation;
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team;
- Good command of English, both written and spoken.

Faculty Mechanical EngineeringFrom chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the ME faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.
ME is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It's a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in ME's outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well?'being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
