Graduate Intern Assessing And Reducing Ship Collision Risks For Storm Surge Barriers - Galveston Bay, Texas

What you do as a graduate intern

As part of the Texas coastal protection plan, the USACE has proposed a storm surge barrier with a double set of sector gates in the Bolivar Roads near Galveston. This is one of the most important and costly (15B$) elements in the proposed coastal protection. In the initial plans by USACE a double sector gate system is proposed in the Houston Ship channel with an island in the middle. A recent study by the Houston and Galveston pilots based on ship simulations showed that this is not a desirable alternative from a marine navigation point of view. Improvements and optimizations are possible with respect to the positioning and alignment of the gates, and the type of gates considered. You will investigate how the ship collision risk differs for various gate designs. This will be done based on several sources such as AIS data, and possibly with ship simulators. In this project you will collaborate with and receive input from hydraulic engineering experts who work on the gate design. Your study will result in an evaluation of various (alternative) gate designs based on ship collision risks, as well as recommendations to minimize these risks.

What you bring as a graduate intern

You have a BSc in Civil Engineering and are enthusiastic about complex and data-driven analyses, on the interface of flood risk, hydraulic engineering and marine traffic.

Where you will work

This thesis is a collaboration between Delft University of Technology and Royal HaskoningDHV. You will closely work with staff from both organizations. Royal HaskoningDHV is a global company with over 6.000 staff in 140 countries and is active in engineering & design and consultancy. We strive to have a positive impact on people and their environment and on the global economy through the projects we do. At Royal HaskoningDHV, you will become part of the Advisory Group Resilience & Maritime the Netherlands. This team consists of around 180 colleagues and is based in the Netherlands across three offices (Rotterdam, Amersfoort and Nijmegen). As a team we excel in a wide variety of services and skills in the fields of Climate Resilience and Maritime developments. We provide our clients, both private and (semi)governmental, with a range of services throughout the various phases of a project: from inception, through master planning, feasibility, design all the way to construction supervision. We have a strong foothold in the Netherlands but we operate worldwide.
