Job description

You are a PhD candidate who is interested in interdisciplinary academic research that connects. This position is for an enthusiastic and dedicated PhD student with special interest in handling large datasets to understand why some people age more rapidly than others. The Department of Internal Medicine of Erasmus MC and the Department of Life Course and Health, Centre Nutrition, Prevention and Health Services of the RIVM (in collaboration with University Medical Centre Utrecht) offer an exciting position for a PhD student within the project VOILA (Vitality Oriented Innovations for Ageing Society). VOILA is a public private initiative of 8 research centres and 8 private partners aimed at understanding and predicting the differences in the way older persons respond to interventions. The overall aim of VOILA is to help people live longer lives with health and vitality

Work environment

This project is a collaboration between the Department of Internal Medicine of Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, and the Department of Life Course and Health, Centre Nutrition, Prevention and Health Services of the RIVM and Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht. The primary location of employment will be Erasmus MC but the candidate should also be willing to work at RIVM periodically.

The mission of the Genetic Laboratory of the Department of Internal Medicine (Erasmus MC) is to understand the genetics of common traits and (aging) diseases and apply the discoveries in clinical practice. The Genetic Laboratory consist of approximately 25 persons and we have an international team of enthousiastic scientists, bio-informaticians, technicians, and support staff, often working with international groups and consortia and publishing at the highest level. Our group holds an excellent track record on applying population genomics and molecular data statistics.

Qualifications and skills
  • We encourage you to apply when you feel prepared to take on challenging aims.
  • You are a PhD student with an MSc degree in a Bioinformatics, Statistics, Biology or related field.
  • Experience of techniques derived from data sciences, including cluster analysis, dimensionality reduction, feature selection, and predictive modelling are required.
  • You must be familiar with languages such as R or Python and with basic epidemiological concepts.
  • Knowledge of analysing dynamic molecular data (DNA methylation, transcriptome, metabolome or microbiome) and/or genetic associations studies are favoured but not required.
  • You enjoy gaining, combining and translating knowledge from multiple fields and have an optimistic and kind nature.
  • You have excellent communication skills, are able to work in a multidisciplinary team with involvement of several key institutes.
  • You have good writing skills for writing papers for international peer-reviewed journals, as well as conveying your message to a more lay audience.

Terms of employment

This position will be temporary, initially for 1 year, with the intention to extend to 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.422 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.103,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
