The TU Delft Library is the largest technical-scientific library in the Netherlands and has the task of safeguarding the availability of technical-scientific information for TU Delft and all of the Netherlands. We focus as much as possible on providing digital services and digital, technical-scientific information.

The Library performs its services with a strong attention to customer service and quality but also aims higher. Where its responsibilities to the university and the Netherlands are concerned, the Library strives to expand its role to new territory. Our expertise enables us to improve the information and knowledge holdings of the university, contribute to the increase, valorisation and exploitation of the knowledge available, and to make this available to parties outside the university.

The Library's Research Data Services are playing a leading role in promiting high-quality Research Data Management. Its Data Stewardship proejct helps reach out to a wide range of researchers at the university, embedding different practices and approaches over a wide range of disciplines. The team is also the host of 4TU.ResearchData, one of the largest data archives in the Netherlands. It has been in existence since 2010 and hosts over 7,500 datasets from a variety of scientific disciplines

Functie omschrijving

The massive quantities of data produced by scientific research create new challenges in terms of storage, curation and dissemination of such data. The field of Research Data Management provides strategies and services to allow such research data to be published, findable and reusable on the web.

As part of its Open Science Programme, TU Delft seeks two Data Managers to meet these challenges. The Data Manager will be part of (and report to the head of) the Research Data Services team at TU Delft Library. However, s/he will be seconded to various TU Delft based research projects over the two-year period of the contract. It is expected that each period of secondment will last three to six months with the possibility of working for more than one project at the same time.Data Managers will provide hands-on, expert support for the data management aspects of research groups and projects at TU Delft, to fulfill the researchers’ actual needs in managing their research data as ‘FAIR as possible: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

Within each research project, the Data Manager will provide support in organising, describing, cleaning, sharing and publishing research data. S/he will pay particular attention to how data is structured to allow for analysis for both researchers in and outside the project or group in question. S/he will have experience, or be willing to learn how to use programming skills.

The Data Manager will also contribute in composing documentation, such as Data Management Plans and related guidelines. S/he will also help develop a sustainability plan for Data Managers at the university. The Data Manager will contribute to a wider network of Data Stewards, Data Champions and expert library staff at a campus-wide and national level. Issues related to managing and sharing confidential information may also play a role.

Functie eisen

Required skills for candidates:


  • Have a good understanding of the role that data management play within contemporary research

  • Have at least a Masters in an academic discipline relevant to those studied at TU Delft, ideally with a strong data component

  • Have experience in modelling data and setting up appropriate tools (data storage solutions for large amounts of data or streams of data, building data catalogs and databases to enable data discovery/use within the department, building data pipelines for large scale experimental facilities) to manage that data

  • Be willing to learn about and engage with a variety of types of data and research projects

  • Have good people and communication skills, with a good level of English

  • Be willing to collaborate with Data Stewards, Data Champions, expert library staff and other support staff (ICT, legal …)

Desired skills for candidates:


  • Have skills in some combination of the following

  • Python, R, Matlab, GIS, SQL or NOSQL databases, SPSS, 3D CAD, OpenDap, NetCDF, Fortran, Docker, C++, GOUDA

  • Have experience in handling confidential data

  • Experience in a university environment and working with scientists

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

These are two positions with a size of 36-40 hours per week (1.0FTE). The employment contract is for a period of 2 year with possibility of extension. The salary is based on scale 10 from the collective agreement for Dutch Universities with a minimum of € 2709 and a maximum of € 4274 gross per month for a full-time appointment. You will be classified on the basis of knowledge and experience. You will accrue pension via the ABP pension fund.

Besides of course the holiday allowance in May, you will receive an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% in December. You can also compile a part of your terms of employment package yourself with the help of the Individual Terms and Conditions package, including buying and selling leave hours.

A good balance between work and private life is important. That is why you can make agreements about flexible working hours, you have many vacation days and parental leave is partially paid.
