(Junior/Senior) Researcher on early-stage analysis of clean energy sources and propulsion technologies for sustainable aviation

Faculty Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The positions are available in the Department of Biotechnology (www.bt.tudelft.nl), which engages in internationally-leading education programmes, and which offers a stimulating environment in the biosciences, combining fundamental research, engineering, and design, all directed towards biotechnological process innovations. The Department covers the areas of biocatalysis, bioprocess engineering, cell systems engineering, environmental biotechnology, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology and society. The Department harbours excellent laboratory facilities and infrastructure and shares a state-of-the-art building with the Bionanoscience and Chemical Engineering departments. Working in such close proximity facilitates inter-departmental collaborations on multidisciplinary projects.

Functie omschrijving

The offered position is within the framework of the H2020 Coordination & Support Action TRANSCEND (“Technology Review of Alternative and Novel Sources of Clean Energy with Next generation Drivetrains”). The (Junior) Researcher will contribute to two major activities, namely: i) Literature study and ii) roadmaps' analysis and workshops, as follows:

  • For the literature study the (Junior) Researcher will prepare a review describing the state-of-the-art for: i) existing and novel propulsion technologies, ii) energy sources for existing (drop-in fuels) and novel (non-drop-in fuels) propulsion technologies, and iii) reported environmental impacts (and other relevant sustainability issues reported in literature). Furthermore, the Researcher will prepare a database for techno-economic and environmental performance of: propulsion technologies, energy sources, and performance indicators.

  • While for the roadmaps' analysis and workshops, the (Junior) Researcher will provide a technical and environmental comparative analysis and screening of selected concepts (from the literature review) based on the combination of propulsion technologies and energy sources. In addition, the Researcher will prepare process flowsheets and detailed mass-energy balances, and provide detailed technical and environmental assessment for five selected of propulsion technologies and energy sources.

  • Master degree in the in the field of Sustainability Analysis or Technology Assessment or similar. Applications from PhDs already graduated will also be considered for an appointment 30% shorter.

  • Strong affinity for understanding the broader context of novel technologies and their economic and environmental impacts related to the entire production chain.

  • Fluency in English both spoken and written. Good communication/reporting skills, and presentation capabilities.

The position is offered as either: Junior Researcher (i.e. MSc graduated) for 12 months @0,8 FTE, or as Senior Researcher (PhD graduated) for 9 months @0.8 FTE. In both cases there will be possibilities for a further appoint as either PhD student or Post-doctoral researcher working on the field of Sustainability Assessment for Advanced Biofuels (Dutch Project in close collaboration with industry) and for Wastewater Treatment Technologies (EU Project in close collaboration with industry and local stakeholders).
