Profile Director of Corporate Compliance & Integrity

This position will play a lead role in providing oversight compliance counselling and leadership for all business groups in the company (including managing the regional compliance programs) as well as leading the company’s investigations function. In this role, you will be expected to develop and drive initiatives to promote a culture of responsible business practices and ethical conduct. You will ensure the Leadership Team, senior management and employees are in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations globally; company policies and procedures are being followed; and behavior in the organization meets the Booking.com Code of Conduct.

The right candidate will have substantive legal experience in a broad spectrum of compliance areas, with primary focus on internal investigations, whistleblowing laws, internal fraud, anti-bribery and corruption laws, and conflicts of interest. You will have experience working with senior business leaders to promote the compliance program agenda and responding to quickly developing regulatory changes (change management experience) and investigation matters. You are a seasoned leader with versatility and a strong commitment to ethics and integrity.

The position will report to Femi Thomas, our Chief Compliance Officer & Global Head of Litigation and will have a team consisting of six reporting to her/him.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maturing the company’s internal investigations program and capabilities - including the tool and technology integration, developing appropriate skills and resources to meet growing regulatory demands in integrity investigations, developing mechanisms for conducting non-investigative compliance assessments.
  • Promoting a healthy working relationship with key reporting stakeholders - including external auditors, regulators and enforcement authorities.
  • Procuring and interpreting legal advice to the various business units to ensure effective controls and promote compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Leading the regional compliance teams - consisting of lawyers and other professionals in EMEA, APAC, NORAM and LATAM regions, and promoting the localization of the compliance program.
  • Contributing to the development of ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) programs in line with broader company objectives and overseeing the human rights risk management program for Booking.com.
    Contributing to the overall maturation of the compliance program as a member of the Compliance and Ethics Leadership Team.

The ideal candidate for the role will have:

  • A minimum of 12 years’ experience in a relevant or transferable area of law
  • 4+ years experience leading, developing and building teams - including experience managing diverse and distanced teams
  • A Law degree with relevant post-qualification leadership experience in compliance and ethics and internal investigations gained at a reputable law firm and or large corporate
  • Experience building compliance program components
  • A strategic mindset and be able to effectively discuss with and advise management regarding complex legal matters and challenging situations
  • Experience identifying and liaising with local counsel around the globe, identifying suitable partners, commissioning work, challenging deliverables etc
  • Strong influencing skills are a must, including the ability to collaborate and problem-solve in a data-driven, international business
  • Experience interacting with external auditors and senior executive leadership
  • Experience working with major internal investigations platforms (Navex) and eDiscovery platforms
  • Experience managing internal resources/budget, and building a strategic plan and related budget request for the team, with clear deliverables and milestones
  • Fluency in English (a must-have; additional European languages are a benefit)
  • Ability to travel up to 20%
