Are you looking for an challenging master internship at one of the Netherlands biggest production companies? Are you interested in characterization of microstructures and would you like to be part of our R&D department? Then we are looking for you!

Wat ga je doen?

The project will focus on mechanical and microstructural studies together with modelling of Mn and C diffusion in a hot-rolled (HR) medium manganese steel with the broad aim of developing the knowledge of microstructure-property relations in the area. The specific objectives are the following:

  • To optimize the phase fractions and stability of retained austenite of the HR medium Mn steel via batch annealing in order to achieve in excess of 1200 MPa ultimate tensile strength with >12% total elongation and good edge/local ductility (hole expansion capacity and bendability)
  • To study the effects of tempering of the as-batch annealed microstructure via heat-to-coat thermal cycles on the mechanical properties
  • To use phase field modelling for microstructure predictions and their experimental validation

You will be involved in development and understanding of an impotant third generation advanced high strength steel in hot-rolled condition intended for automotive chassis and suspension applications. You will start the work by reading related literature in the field and plan the work keeping in mind the objectives of the project. You will carry out both theoretical predictions and experimental characterizations of the steel jointly at Tata Steel and in your University

  • You are looking for a master internship for a 9 months duration;
  • You are a master student with a background in materials engineering, metallurgical or similar;
  • You are a student at a Dutch University and you live in the Netherlands;
  • You master the English language;
  • You have experience or interest in characterization of microstructures using advanced techniques such as FEG-SEM, XRD, EBSD, EDS, EPMA;
  • You have experience or interest in thermodyncamic/kinetic modeling of phase transformations;
  • You take initiative and can work independently.

Wat is jouw werkomgeving?

You will work in an R&D atmosphere where the colleagues have both academic and industrial knowledge. Specifically, you will join the research group of “High Strength Strip Steels” of Tata Steel R&D in IJmuiden which is a group of eleven metallurgists/material scientists dedicated to the research and development of high strength steels for automotive and engineering applications. Your sitting place will be in an office in the Innovation Centre of Tata Steel R&D that houses engineers and researchers from both metallurgy and application areas.
