To achieve that ambition, we are strengthening our sensory capability and therefore we are looking for an experienced sensory scientist.

The Science & Technology (S&T) team in the Foods & Refreshment (F&R) division is an agile team of enthusiastic world-class scientists with a clear purpose:

We combine key capabilities across the end-to-end spectrum of food science, biotechnology & engineering with unique knowledge on flavour & formulation sciences, all underpinned by digital modelling capabilities, to deliver differentiating innovations to market that meet consumer needs every day. The S&T team has a passion for continuous learning and works according to agile principles with a strong can-do mindset.

The Job

The position sits within the Future Flavour platform and focuses on providing sensory science research for the development of foods that are healthy and sustainable. The work will cover the entire range from setting up sensory studies to data-based modelling.

The applicant should have passion, drive and commitment to develop and apply sensory science in order to help create foods that provide exciting and pleasurable experiences in line with Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan. Essential to the role are excellent skills in sensory science and multi-sensory integration combined with experience in modelling of sensory data. As lead sensory scientist, you will use your experience to set the agenda for sensory research in S&T and develop strategies to create sensory models for current and future generations of healthy and sustainable foods and ingredients.

What you will do

  • Develop and lead science-based project proposals in line with the needs of S&T development teams;

  • Independently lead sensory research and manage the delivery of agreed project milestones;

  • Provide up-to-date expertise within the field of sensory science, particularly in the area of perception psychophysics and multisensory integration;

  • Generate and develop new ideas for the Unilever business and lead project activities in the area of sensory science and multisensory integration;

  • Analyse, interpret and present quantitative data;

  • Define modelling needs with internal modelling experts and analytical scientists; Build an internal and external network in sensory science and sensometrics.

All about you

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in sensory perception / multisensory science;

  • A strong publication record in the field of (multi-)sensory science and perception;

  • Experience in conducting business relevant (multi-)sensory perception research;

  • Practical experience of (scientific) research in a business environment;

  • Experience with modelling sensory data;

  • An active, international academic network;

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (in English);

  • An interest in working outside your current area of expertise, and ability to do so;

  • Good computer and programming skills with experience in relevant programming environments and languages (SAS/JMP, R, Python) are desirable;

  • Experience in the selection and use of data interpretation, data analysis and data storage protocols is desirable.
