Principal Hardware Systems Engineer

Microsoft Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for a phenomenal Systems Engineer with a strong passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

As a Principal Hardware Systems Engineer, you will be the technical voice to the program collaborating across several functional teams from Silicon to customers within Microsoft. You will be leading the system level implementation, building validation strategies, and influencing architecture to deliver high quality solutions to the customers. You will also develop guidelines for system bring-up and evaluation. This is an excellent opportunity to work on next generation architecture and innovative technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical point of contact and collaborate with several cross functional teams across silicon, platform, network, customer teams, and ODMs on solution architecture and system design. Lead teams through difficult design decisions and complicated debugs.
  • Enable HPC platform and solution level discussions, influencing architecture of the product and delivering to the quality goals across reliability, safety, manufacturability, serviceability, and performance.
  • Develop guidelines for validation strategies, manufacturing, system bring-up, and system evaluation.
  • Design, test, and debug complex hardware technologies.
  • Perform complex system analysis to identify highly complex issues that may affect a range of feature or product design changes. Identify possible solutions to novel and challenging problems.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and data center teams on system bring up, cluster planning, and performance benchmarks and other KPIs.
  • Perform NUD (New, Unique, Different) module feature analysis against supplier’s capabilities and provide risk mitigation for identified gaps and schedule impact assessment.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in electrical and systems design or validation, systems architecture, and systems engineering across all stages of development and release cycles.
  • Understanding the server, storage, rack, and network design lifecycles & tools is a must.
  • Experience with hardware, firmware, & software (system & application stack) interfaces across all modules in a system.
  • Experience developing hardware verification and functional test plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the debug of complex hardware technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of high-volume server design and manufacturing is desired.
  • Knowledge of HPC and highly scalable technologies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a high paced product development environment.
  • Knowledge about datacenters & operations at scale.
  • Experience driving hardware programs through the entire product lifecycle.
  • Solid fundamentals of semiconductor technology.
  • System engineering process & practices – requirements definition, architecture, implementation & validation.
  • Experience assessing technical risks, driving solutions, and impact assessment.
  • Experience working across disciplines and organizations to resolve complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
