Principal SoC Verification Engineer

Microsoft's hardware teams incubate advanced technologies and build deep partnerships with internal research, product planning, business and marketing teams. Microsoft ships tens of millions of hardware products every year, including the Xbox, Surface devices, HoloLens, accessories, and much more. Our opportunities represent a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, design, verification, performance modeling, and DevOps supporting the development of custom silicon. Microsoft’s hardware teams are also expanding into new technologies such as quantum computing! We are looking for the best and brightest to join us in designing for the future!

Responsibilities

The newly formed Portland silicon computing development team is seeking passionate, driven and intellectually curious engineers to join the pre-silicon verification (including IP, integration, and full-chip aspects) team for our projects. This new team will be involved in numerous projects within Microsoft developing custom silicon for a diverse set of systems. We are responsible for delivering cutting-edge, custom SoC designs that can perform complex and high-performance functions in the most efficient manner. In this high impact role on the team, you will:

  • Own verification of complex IP integration and/or SoC level flows
  • Expand your expertise to the overall architecture, implementation of complex features/flows/protocols, and their interactions with other parts of the SOC, with the platform, and with software
  • Develop verification strategy, requirements, environments, tools, and methodologies
  • Apply your expertise in verification principles and techniques and your judgement to write test plans and implement them by developing tests, test generators, test benches, checkers, coverage, and other verification collateral
  • Run tests, debug failures to root cause, and recommend fixes
  • Apply your growth mindset to learn and adapt in a complex and dynamic environment
  • Engage with partners to drive continuous improvement to both the design, to verification plans/collateral, and to methodology to prevent, reduce, and/or find bugs sooner, more easily, or more reliably
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to engineers across the team
  • Apply your One Microsoft mentality to collaborate with and influence architects, logic designers, post-silicon validators, other verification engineers, and IP and tool providers
  • Delight your customers by providing high quality results on schedule
  • Provide technical leadership with respect and integrity
  • Apply your expertise towards post-silicon validation plans, tests, and debug of your area

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Candidate must have at least a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related degree or work experience
  • 8+ years of verification experience
  • Applied understanding of Computer Architecture and CPU/SoC design and verification principles as part of CPU, SoC and/or IP development teams
  • Experience using industry standard HDLs like SystemVerilog
  • Proficient experience defining, developing, and using verification environments in industry standard languages like SVTB UVM or formal verification
  • Proficient experience writing scripts/software with industry standard languages like Python or C/C++

Additional Preferred Requirements:

  • Verification, logic development, or validation experience as part of a CPU, SoC and/or IP development team
  • Demonstrated success in running cross-disciplinary taskforces
  • Deep expertise in one or more SoC subsystems or system flow
  • Have successfully developed and driven verification technical strategy and capabilities in a particular area
  • Proficient leadership skills
  • Proficient communication, collaboration and teamwork skills and ability to contribute to diverse and inclusive teams
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following:
  • Verification Architect: Have successfully developed and driven overall program verification technical strategy and capabilities, delivering a successful product from conception to functional silicon
  • Experience building and optimizing simulation, emulation, and/or FPGA verification environments, tools, flows, and methodologies
  • Integration, verification, validation and/or development of:
  • CPU cores, protocols, and related firmware
  • Fabrics using industry standard coherent and non-coherent protocols
  • Power Management (PM) IPs, firmware, SoC level features/flows, OS/software interactions
  • Memory Controller/PHY IPs, DDR protocols, and related firmware/BIOS/MRC
  • PCIe Controller/PHY IPs, protocols and related firmware
  • USB Controller/PHY IPs, protocols and related firmware
  • Manageability IPs, protocols, and related firmware
  • Security IPs, firmware, SoC level features/flows, OS/software interactions, including
  • Both prescriptive (e.g. identifying and testing assets and access methods) and non-prescriptive (e.g. leading a Red Hat team, hackathons) methods
  • Drive product security awareness and methodology across the team
  • Design for Debug IPs, features, flows, and related firmware
  • Design for Test IPs, features, flows, and related firmware
  • Full chip and system level flows and protocols
