The research of the Angiogenesis Laboratory at the Department of Medical Oncology of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam aims to unravel fundamental processes and mechanisms of angiogenesis and vascular development using molecular and cell biological techniques. The acquired knowledge is used to develop new treatment modalities and diagnostic tools for clinical applications.
The Angiogenesis Laboratory developed immuno-Boost (iBoost), a technology that allows the production of vaccines against self-antigens in the tumor vasculature. This strategy aims at inducing immune responses against low- or non-immunogenic antigens. Influenza virus is a threat to society and due to virus mutation, every season the vaccine needs to be adapted. Success of vaccination against influenza is therefore only between 0 and 60%. By analysis of the influenza genome of all variants that have spread since the 1960s, this project aims to develop an evolution-proof vaccine that will protect efficiently, also against future virus variants. The Angiogenesis Laboratory secured major funding from Health-Holland to design such targeted vaccine against influenza. A similar project is running on developing vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. An important overlap of this project with the development of vaccines against cancer will be part of this project. The candidate is expected to participate in the development of cancer vaccines as well. The candidate will join an enthusiastic team and will supervise internship students.Your profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic team-player and knowledge in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry or related fields. You have solid knowledge of virology, immunology, cancer, vascular biology and immunology. You also have ample experience in cell culture and molecular/cell biological techniques. Experience with techniques such as FACS sorting, molecular cloning, qPCR, ELISA, recombinant protein production and bioinformatics, as well as vaccination technologies is a preference. An article 9 or 12 registration (‘Wet op de Proefdieren’) is a major preference. In addition, you will be actively involved in development and optimization of novel assays and technologies.Your work environment
The project is a collaboration with the VUMC startup company CimCure BV and the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC. It will run for 3 years. We work with an enthousiastic and motivated multidisplinary team of about 10 researchers. Next to the PhD student, the current project team is also looking for a postdoctoral fellow. It is likely that after 3 years funds will be secured to continue with this project, or a related project for the development of vaccines against cancer.

Salary Scale PHD: 2495 tot 3196 euro gross when employed full-time (depending on qualifications and experience).
The monthly wage will increase yearly to the maximum salary in the fourth year of 3,196 € gross per month.

– Pension is accrued at the ABP. VUmc contributes a large part of the premium (70%).
