Research Software Development Engineer – Cloud Operations Research – Microsoft Research

This position can be based in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Brazil, Puerto Rico.

You have a unique opportunity to join our research team in MSR in designing and implementing algorithmic solutions for cloud systems and applications. Example projects include but are not limited to VM allocation, cloud supply-chain optimization and machine learning for cloud systems. An innovative optimization solution can translate directly to millions of dollars in savings on cloud operations!

Note: this is a remote position. The successful applicants will be provided with resources necessary to work remotely.

Responsibilities

This research software developer position is for a research engineer with strong software engineering background coupled with expertise in algorithms. You are expected to transform algorithmic solutions into concrete prototypes and implementations, which may lead to both research and product impact. Towards that end, you will engage with researchers and developers in a start-up-like environment, and collaborate closely with Microsoft’s major product groups, such as Azure. You may also contribute to research papers and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Required:

    • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Operations Research, or related discipline
    • At least four years of programming experience in C/C++/C#/Java/Python
    • Proven practical experience in optimization/algorithm design

    Preferred:

    • Experience in machine learning and data science
    • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms and distributed systems
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
    • Ability to work effectively in a team
    • Research background
