Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor Computational Chemistry and Metabolic Networks
Metabolomics and chemical proteomics can measure biochemical network changes. These changes in biochemical networks due to disease or exposure to external factors can be measured in in-vitro models and advanced organ-on-a-chip models. A large amount of public and proprietary data has been generated in these areas. To couple in-vitro measurements to clinical data and pre-clinical data, advanced algorithms are needed to gain more information and knowledge from omics and mass-spectrometry based data, including quantification and identification/structure elucidation of metabolites and lipids. Exploring these data sources, connecting, and looking for breakthroughs on the border of chemistry, mass spectrometry, pharmaceutical sciences, and medicine is the ambition of this position.
The candidate will establish and maintain an independent research program within the Division of Systems Biomedicine and Pharmacology. Research is performed on the boundary of drug research and metabolomics. Candidates should have a background in chemistry and affinity with drug research. Candidates from the (broad) field of chemistry are invited to apply. Candidates aspire to excel in their discipline, and are open to collaborate within the institute with complementary disciplines, as well as other institutes within our faculty. Candidates are expected to contribute to the teaching programs of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research, which include Bachelor and Master programs in Biopharmaceutical Sciences (BPS), as well as the Master program in Pharmacy. The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) is a leading institute dedicated to world-class research and education in drug discovery and development. LACDR comprises a diverse and international team of approximately 150 researchers. The research conducted at the LACDR is clustered within the divisions of BioTherapeutics, Drug Discovery & Safety and Systems Biomedicine & Pharmacology. The various research topics carried out within these themes are ideal for executing interdisciplinary research from, a strong monodisciplinary basis.
LACDR has key research applications in the area of drug research (small molecules and biologics) and computational research (artificial intelligence (AI) and mechanistic models). Research collaborations are in place between LACDR on one hand and the institutes of chemistry, biology, and the university medical center on the other. Key to the AI approaches is the recently inaugurated ALICE computer cluster at the university. Currently plans are formed for a second iteration that is set to more than double the calculation capacity. Moreover, at the LACDR researchers are running an internationally highly recognized research program on metabolomics comprising high throughput mass spectrometry-based technologies, computational metabolic modeling and artificial intelligence. In addition, in-vitro models, stem cell technologies and advanced imaging technologies are used for translational drug research (also in collaboration with the LUMC). Chemical proteomics strategies (LIC) are used for drug discovery, and innovative medicinal chemistry approaches to discover and develop compounds for several therapeutic areas. Leiden is part of several large key national programs (X-Omics, Exposome-NL) and international programs (eTRANSAFE, EU-ToxRisk) and data are integrated with in-vitro models and established knowledge; Leiden is leading several FAIR and open science initiatives to apply these to sophisticated AI approaches.

Terms and conditions
The assistant or associate professor starts with a temporary contract for a period of six years (tenure track) with the possibility of permanent employment based on good performance.
The gross monthly salary at assistant professor level is between € 3.746,-and € 5.826,- (pay scale 11 or 12) and at associate professor level is between € 5.190,- and € 6.940,- (pay scale 13 or 14)depending on your level of experience. (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and other benefits; these include an annual holiday premium of 8%, an end-of-year premium of 8.3% and a paid parental leave of 62,5%.
