Backend developer - PPC

In Performance Marketing we are the primary entry point for acquisition of new customers for Booking.com.

The PPC (Pay-Per-Click) group accounts for a significant portion of Performance Marketing. We are composed of world class data scientists, engineers and marketeers focused on driving acquisition of new customers via online advertising. Behind all this is a critical and highly scaled infrastructure of system, tools, data pipelines and ML infrastructure that makes sure we are spending our money wisely and attract traffic to our website as efficiently as possible.

As part of this dynamic and highly impactful team you will be working to modernize and build new systems to support online auction bidding at scale as well as a high velocity of experimentation. You will use cloud based technologies to build new systems to support higher levels of reliability, resiliency and performance of our systems. You will also, along with the rest of our team, support the reliability of our existing infrastructure.

As a Back End Developer, you are responsible for the development, performance, and scaling of our online marketing/advertising systems.

Important aspects of the job include:

  • Rapidly developing next-generation scalable, flexible, and high-performance systems with a focus on building, maintaining and monitoring data pipelines in the public cloud and on-premise
  • Working independently, taking ownership, acting as an intermediary for problems, with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Solving issues with the existing systems, prioritizing based on business and technical needs and communicating impact to the team and users
  • Ensuring reliability and increasing the maturity of all systems via the use of system health monitoring tools and building new health indicators as needed
  • Contributing to the growth of Booking.com through interviewing, on-boarding, or other recruitment efforts as needed

We are looking for driven Developers who enjoy solving problems, who initiate solutions and discussions and who believe that any challenge can be scaled with the right mindset and tools.

For long term success, genuine and evolving curiosity over time about the business goals, the use of data, the importance of key data quality, and how our systems can be best used to improve bottom line performance is a must.

We have found that people who match the following requirements are the ones who fit us best:

  • Minimum of 3 years software development experience (Java, Python, Scala, C++ etc)
  • Prior experience with distributed systems which are highly scalable and available
  • Knowhow to implement and control the flow of data, to and from a service provider with an obsession about data quality, availability and intended use
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Knowledge of key features of Cloud Service Providers (e.g.GCP, Big Query, Kubernetes)
  • Highly desirable is having worked in virtual environments and the public cloud
  • Preferably experience with Google Ad(words) API/SDKs
  • Experience with data streaming technologies (e.g. Kafka) is nice to have
  • Excellent communication; written and spoken with a desire to share knowledge and collaborate across Development, Data Science, Infra and Business teams
