Medtronic’s Indirect tax group consists of a VAT Planning & Advisory team, located in the Netherlands, and a VAT compliance team, located at Medtronic’s shared services center in Prague, Czech Republic. Medtronic is looking for a VAT Manager, EMEA who will strengthen the VAT Planning & Advisory team based in Medtronic’s EOC in Heerlen, Netherlands.
The VAT planning & advisory team in Heerlen is an integral part of the Global Tax Function, a large and diverse tax group that works closely together. The team collaborates on a daily basis with cross functional stakeholders in the EMEA region. As a VAT Manager you will be reporting and providing support to the VAT Senior Manager EMEA on all VAT matters for all the entities under responsibility in the EMEA region. In this role, you will deal with VAT planning and advisory in multiple EMEA jurisdictions (~30 countries), work on many different types of projects & have regular interaction with business, supply chain and finance leaders as you help them solve their VAT issues.

Your responsibilities and daily activities include:
•Provide timely advice to Medtronic businesses & recommend potential planning alternatives to minimize VAT liabilities in various EMEA countries.•Responsibility for VAT planning, advisory, audit & project work across EMEA.•Manage VAT audits and controversy in the EMEA region; liaison with country tax inspectors while also working closing with local finance and the VAT Compliance Manager on filed return positions to ensure a successful outcome for Medtronic.•Support the M&A Tax Group and Business Tax Planning Group on VAT due diligence for EMEA acquisitions and divestitures, as well as strategic alliances / JVs. Support integration activities including entity combinations, supply chain product flow and coordinating with the VAT Compliance Manager on how resolve pre-closing VAT liabilities for acquired entities. •Collaborate with IT, Supply Chain, Transfer Pricing, Accounts Payable, Customs / Trade Compliance & other departments on SAP changes that affect VAT invoicing on all intercompany and customer sales of product and services, including VAT codes and product coding.•Advise EMEA country controllers on VAT technical rules and work with controllers to establish proper SOX & tax control procedures so that the controllers can determine and record proper tax accounting (and tax reserves) related to VAT in the company’s financial books and records.•Assist in the setting of correct VAT rates on all company products & services in each country in the EMEA region and obtaining tax rulings (when appropriate) from tax authorities to minimize VAT risk on Medtronic products and services.•Promote & drive continuous improvements using the Lean methodology in line with the Medtronic Operating System (MOS). Lead process changes in the VAT planning, advisory, audit and controversy area.•Increasing the profile of the VAT department (and the importance of VAT) within Medtronic.•People management and coaching of other team members on VAT technical aspects. •Partner with and provide VAT technical support to the Vat Compliance team, located in Prague.•Such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the EMEA VAT Sr Manager, the EMEA VAT Director, Tax Department management team, country controllers or EMEA Finance leaders.
•Master in Tax Law/ Tax Economics, Accounting or Business Administration.•7-10 years of relevant EU VAT experience, either in a(n) (Big Four) advisory firm or in a multinational corporation. •Extensive knowledge of EU VAT Law and an understanding of accounting, finance and controls.•ERP system knowledge (SAP) is preferred but not a must.•Team player – ability to work well in a large dynamic environment.•Understanding the interest of building and maintaining a talented VAT team and communicating timely, transparently and in a constructive manner. •Proven history of managing VAT projects (including planning & advisory) and developing staff.•Commercially minded & understands the non-VAT business objectives.•Excellent communicator & influencer; can explain complex VAT issues in easy to understand business language to non-VAT colleagues & influence decisions.•Professional with strong work ethic.•Able to establish favorable networks at all levels, with both internal & external stakeholders. This is particularly important in a highly matrix organization as in the case in Medtronic. •Able to manage & effect outcomes, rather than simply provide advice.•Ability to apply good judgment & problem-solving skills to identify critical risks. •Organized; strong project management skills with results-oriented focus.•Independent thinker, creative and open minded, constantly looking for improvement opportunities.•Energetic with an enthusiastic, detailed oriented and hands-on approach.•Fluency in English a must. Fluency in other languages are a plus.•Industry experience not required but would be advantageous.We Offer
