Specialist R&D – Sassenheim Polymer Laboratory

Plan, setup and execute experiments to innovate synthetic polymers
AkzoNobel is a global leader in the area of Decorative Paints and Performance Coatings. This success is based on the highest levels of research and innovation. Central to this research capability is the Resin Technology team, in which the Sassenheim Polymer Laboratory (SPL) works on challenging research projects aiming at developing new and innovative polymer concepts for the global Paints & Coatings market.

Within this context, your mission in this role is to perform experiments under the supervision of a Project- or Team Leader in the polymer laboratory in order to make new binders for paints and coatings. Also, synthetic work may be required to support AkzoNobel resin factories and toll manufacturers to deliver the highest quality materials into our supply chain. As such, this is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and forward-thinking candidates who can draw conclusions from experiments and research and who would love to work in a chemical laboratory.

Specialist R&D in the Sassenheim Polymer Laboratory

The role and its responsibilities
Working in the Sassenheim Polymer Laboratory you discuss, design, plan and execute synthetic experiments against the timings and objectives demanded by paint projects or internal investigations. In doing so you deliver high quality materials to paint researchers for further paint development, reporting findings to key stakeholders and designing follow-up experiments as necessary. At all times you work safely with chemicals and chemical reactors, in line with good laboratory practice and safety standards. Further, you remain current with internal and external developments in the field of binders, adding to the team’s overall knowledge via the publication of findings in reports.

Candidate profile
To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor/Higher vocational organic (polymer) chemistry (starter or experienced) or MLO with significant work experience
  • Affinity with chemistry and polymer science
  • Creative and interested to explore new problems and challenges
  • Able to transfer knowledge and materials downstream the development chain
  • Enthusiastic, team player
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills including strong written and verbal in English and Dutch.
