Senior Virtual Engineer

The Role

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated engineer for a Senior Virtual Engineer position that focuses on developing code as well as testing and simulation for digital manufacturing equipment and its sub-assemblies. This position concentrates specifically on industrial Virtual Commissioning, Digital Twin integration, Industrial PC/PLC software simulation/emulation, code development using Structured Text/object-oriented programming and automatic testing. The digital equipment simulations include driven robotic cells, servo actuated mechatronic systems and high volume automated process equipment. This is an exciting opportunity to build a world class digital manufacturing facility at the Fremont factory in California.

Responsibilities

Senior Virtual Engineers work with cross-functional teams to design, validate, and final roll-out of digital equipment to achieve full production line simulation. Candidate will be key in driving standardization across all digital manufacturing lines and processes as well as other manufacturing product lines at Tesla factories.

He/She will work closely with external equipment integrators and internally with Product Design Engineer, Design Technology team, Mechanical Engineer, Control engineer, Robotic Engineer, Maintenance and Core Automation Services to bring Tesla components from initial design, through prototype development and finally into full simulation.

You will be engaged in a digitalization journey that will revolutionize our way of thinking about simulation at Tesla. You will be collaborating with a very wide network of colleagues to put simulation on the map

Specific responsibilities include:

·Drive the development of simulation capabilities with focus on kinematics and virtual commissioning by defining the simulation processes, tools and competences needed

·Scope and execute activities to enhance our simulation accuracy and the extent to which simulation is applied and automated

·Perform simulation tasks from across a global production setup

·Collaborate with the Product Engineering organization, ensuring a smooth flow between the product and production simulations

·Support the automation effort in the endeavor to automate the entire Virtual Commissioning development process

·Develop Virtual Commissioning standards

·Implement (ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) digital control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment.

·Train Maintenance and Production teams to support Digital twin equipment after deployment into production and post production

Requirements

  • BS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in: Computer Science, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.)

-5+ years of experience as a hands-on Controls Engineer or Robotics Engineer working on virtual/digital automation and/or electromechanical systems.

  • Or MS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in: Computer Science, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.)

-3+ years of experience as a hands-on Controls Engineer or Robotics Engineer working on virtual/digital automation and/or electromechanical systems.

  • Experience with simulation tools for kinematic simulation and virtual commissioning (eg. Dassault, Siemens, Kuka)
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD design software such as Catia V5 and V6 or SolidWorks
  • Demonstrated experience in automated and robotics systems and building simulation models related to these systems
  • Solid programming skills with demonstrated ability to use at least one programming language (C++, Java, Python, etc..)
  • Natural curiosity and feel comfortable working in uncertain areas where knowledge needs to be developed
  • Willingness to learn different simulation tools and train other engineers
  • Good communication skills, and you speak and write English fluently
  • Exposure to a wide variety of digital production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (Robot, LVDT and pressure transducers, dispense systems, temperature controllers, DC nutrunner torque controllers, current and power meters, etc.)
  • Experience with programming Cartesian, SCARA and Articulated robots is highly desired (Fanuc, Kuka, Motoman, Epson)
  • Knowledge of production quality metrics is a plus
  • Software like MeshLab
