De Thales Secure Communication and Information Systems (SIX)- vestiging in Huizen is met ca. 300 medewerkers actief op het gebied van communicatiesystemen, cybersecurity en transportsystemen. De Innovation, Research & Technology (IRT) groep ondersteunt de lokale productlijnen met het onderzoeken en toepasbaar maken van nieuwe innovaties in nationale en internationale onderzoeksprojecten. Een wisselende groep van onderzoeksstaf, R&D engineers, onderzoekers van andere Thales vestigingen en studenten draagt actief bij aan deze projecten.

Information about the department:

With approximately 300 employees, the Thales Secure Communication and Information Systems (SIX) branch in Huizen is active in the field of communication systems, cyber security and transport systems. The Innovation, Research & Technology (IRT) group supports the local product lines with research and risk reduction for new innovations often in the context of national and international research projects. A changing group of research staff, R&D engineers, researchers from other Thales locations and students actively contributes to these projects.

About the assignment

In scenarios like disaster sites, reliable communication is not always guaranteed and can be disrupted due to failing or non-existing infrastructure. For drones to operate under such conditions, and to transmit their video information to ground stations, robust communication is vital. The Disruptive Tolerant networking approach is based on store-and-forward communication, and can provide robust communications solutions, in case no end-to-end connection is available. Focus of this internship is the study and development of a lightweight disruptive tolerant networking stack.

The internship consists of

- Deploy small footprint disruptive tolerant network protocol(s) on one or multiple drone platforms taking in consideration power and weight.

- Investigating how to combine real-time communications with delay – tolerant communications, so that drone can offload video when there is a direct connection, but stores when there is no end-to-end connection.

- Investigate and / or implement mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) routing protocols for drone swarming for efficient and reliable communication between drones and to one or more ground stations.

- Investigate the integration with ROS2 (Robot Operating System 2) and disruptive tolerant network protocol(s).

The assignment is suitable as an internship and graduation assignment. The scope of the assignment can be adjusted accordingly.

Affinity
